Allegheny National Forest
The road calls: ever present, her siren song stirs the soul and beckons onward to sites yet unseen. Sometimes we answer with long trips to far away destinations. Sometimes we answer with short drives to familiar places - but always, will her call be answered.
It was supposed to be an easy three and half hour drive, the destination an unknown place with unknown sites. I like to surprise my wife. Her smile, normally bright and full of life, could rival the sun when the promise of a surprise is presented. We loaded the Jeep with cameras and coats, thermos of coffee and a bag full of snacks and set off. The destination would remain a total mystery to Amber until I got us lost and needed her to navigate.
Upon arrival we found snow covered mountains, ice climbers, deep and rich forests toying with our sense of adventure, ice fishermen plying their craft upon the frozen serpent that helped to forge this land. Around us the land was awash in the beauty winter. The air chilled. The land quiet. And above it all, the road, gentle and meandering, led us on to the true destination; the sense of peace and contentment that can only come from unplugging, slowing down and remembering that the siren's song is a reminder that life, like the road, is about the journey and not the destination.
