Lewiston, NY
Across the river from Canada, lies a sleepy little village that time has seemed to forgotten. People chat with neighbors, restaurants will stay open longer so you can eat, have a cup of coffee and relax with a book. There is an air of stillness that settles over you, like a blanket on a cold winter's morning.
This is the town of Lewiston, New York. Nestled among more grandiose sites, like Niagara Falls, the Devil's Whirlpool and international cities like Toronto, this quaint little village welcomes you with its stunning natural beauty and polite manners.
It's our first wedding anniversary and without the means or time for a lavish excursion we settled on the four-hour drive to this little hamlet; staying at the old but well-tended-to Barton Hill Inn. We've meandered tree-lined streets filled with beautiful old homes and white-picket fences. Today we'll explore the town's harvest festival, taking in the sites and sounds of this living Norman Rockwell painting. We'll see the majesty of Niagara Falls and experience first class shopping in Buffalo.
Tomorrow, with the morning's mist rising from the Niagara River, we'll head home. Leaving behind this little town that has imprinted itself into our hearts. And hopefully we'll take with us this lesson of slowing down, speaking thoughtfully and savoring the simple moments that make life worth living.
