The Life You Choose

The sun is breaking over the Rocky Mountains, cascading highlights shimmering like water over the rough surface.  All around our make-shift home, belongings are scattered despite our best efforts.  Cameras, journals, shoes and personal items - its the chaos of travel.

Six months earlier....

Outside the sun radiated a foretelling warmth and the sky was the most amazing shade of light blue.  Seated by the windows, we had a first hand view of the optimism of the winter sun.  Inside, cups of tea kept the chill out while we let the melodic tones of some indie folk-rock wash over us. We had a simple discussion, in straightforward tones, of traveling and living life as we’ve imagined.

Each day is a constant struggle to reconcile the passions of our heart with the cold reality of life.  As each day dawns, it is indifferent.  It is neither good nor bad - the day will become what we make of it.  We can choose to give into frustrations, or we can follow the dictates of our dreams.   Often speaking with the ambitiousness of a waning youth, we dream of a life of adventure and travel; a life less ordinary.

A life on the road with no certainty sounds like a romantic proposition.  Think of the things we'll see - the experiences we'll have! And then, just like that, the sun shines, casting rays of hope across the cold winter landscape. There are no rules to life.  There is no certain path to anything.  Life is about seizing the moment, creating a connection and living as fully as your capable of.  Should we go?  That's not a question that even deserves to be asked because the answer will always be the same, yes, we should.

There will never be a perfect time to do anything - kids will arrive whether your ready, jobs will go before you're financially stable, loved ones will leave us, and time will march on regardless.  Sometimes you just have to decide and go.

So here's to a life of uncertainty lived by no one's rules but our own.

  1. OMG! that's beautiful Frank, you can really communicate your feelings in such a poetic way. You speak wisdom of a much older generation. So happy you are living out your dream, I hope you never stop.
